Pruning has many benefits besides the obvious—controlling the shape and size of a plant. In the railroad garden, pruning is most often used to shape and open up small trees, especially evergreens, to make them look more mature and tree-like. Pruning in this way is benefited by a judicious eye and becomes more intuitive and easier with practice. However, there are other reasons for pruning you might want to consider.
