Hardscape in the garden railway

Ideas for adding hard landscape materials to your railway

“Hardscape” is a term used by landscape designers, among others, to designate hard landscape materials, such as gravel, rock or stone, concrete, timber, metals, etc., as opposed to soft landscape materials, referring to plants. This applies to garden railways as well, where hard materials could also include track, bridges, structures, and all the other accessories we use to create an authentic world in miniature. In this column I want to discuss some of the varieties of hardscape one can use, in the landscape sense, and highlight several of its innovative applications in a selection of garden railroads.
