New York’s Grand Central Terminal turned 100 in February of this year. This book was published as a celebration, largely in photos, drawings, and other illustrations, of what many consider to be the most important railroad structure in America.

The book briefly touches on various aspects of Grand Central Terminal: its history (both actual and political), reason for its existence, its predecessors, the people involved in its creation, its design and construction, and a great deal more that most of us don’t know about this iconic station. No particular topic is gone into in much depth; that’s left to the history books.

This volume is more of a visual presentation of the building in all its aspects. Many of the photographs, both historic and modern, have never been published before. The station is presented in bite-size pieces. Chapters include “Beaux-Arts Splendor,” “Behind the Scenes,” “Markets, Mail, and Movie Stars,” and “New York’s Town Square.”

The purpose of this book—one it fulfills well—is to give the reader a sense of the Grand Central Terminal: its grandeur, its importance to the culture of New York, and its place in the history of the city and of the railroads in this country.

The book is beautifully produced. Print quality is excellent. The paper is heavy, with a matte finish, and photo reproduction, both black-and-white and color, is top notch.
